Assessments

We understand that the first appointment can be stressful for many people. Some people choose to make a list of their concerns to bring to the appointment. This is helpful, but not essential. It is useful for you to bring along the names and dosages of any medication that you are taking regularly.

First assessments are normally up to 60 minutes long. Follow-up appointments can vary between 15 to 30 or 60 minutes in duration depending upon the work that needs to be done.

Having arranged an appointment, we will send you some forms to complete, either by email or by post. These forms need to be completed to provide us with basic information to facilitate your care. Please complete and return the forms by post or on attending your first appointment.

If the forms have not been received or completed, please arrive 15 minutes earlier than your appointment time so that you can complete the forms prior to the assessment.

What happens at the first appointment?

You will be invited to discuss your symptoms, concerns and any circumstances that may be contributing to your difficulties. We will ask you for some information about your background, family, relationships, lifestyle and general health as these contribute to a full understanding of the difficulty that you want to deal with.

We usually see patients on their own but a relative or friend is welcome to attend with you, if you would prefer.

What happens next?

We will advise you about any further investigations, if indicated, and about treatment.

As part of good practice, we will write to your GP with a summary of the assessment and recommendations. This is particularly helpful when medication is part of the treatment plan, as the GP will often agree to prescribe the recommended medication and this is likely to be more convenient for you.

Please Note: In the event that you do not want to involve your GP, please make this preference clear at the appointment.
